The project has 3 tasks that will be carried out in three consecutive phases.

  1. The first task is the development of a theoretical justification for phenomenologically hermeneutical methodology.
The objective is to identify, review and develop theories that support the intended methodology. While Husserl’s original phenomenology is a study of the structures of consciousness, unTERROR accents the concepts of meaning, life-world, intersubjectivity and otherness, lived experience, and empathy.
  2. The second task is to analyse propaganda articles made by terrorist actors.
The objective is to perform exploratory case study by analysing propaganda texts produced by the terrorist organisation Islamic State.
  3. The third task is to develop a model of phenomenologically hermeneutical methodology, as well as practical recommendations for policy makers and decision-makers in counter-terrorism services.
The objective is to deliver a description of PHM consisting of methodological guidelines and conceptual framework as a tool for interpretation of themes in order to deepen the understanding of terror as an existential condition that constitutes person’s life-world, horizon of meanings and value orientation.

The main scientific result of the study will be 3 scientific articles

The main results of the project will be at least 3 peer-reviewed scientific articles in high-impact journals.

Other results

Recommendations for decision-makers, presentations in conferences and seminars, and a number of popular articles.

In the framework of this industrial study, a methodological instrument will be established, which will not only be an important step forward in terrorism research but also contribute to the practical efforts to combat terrorism. The novelty and originality of the project is the development of a new, theoretical and evidence-based methodology based on phenomenology and philosophical hermeneutics.
